Södermalm Curling Championship 2019

The beginning of spring in Sweden is a beautiful sight and the club decided to close the winter season off with the annual Södermalm Curling Championship. Larry organized a “curling lesson for beginners” at the local curling rink. Everyone that singed up for the event were definitely all beginners at the start of the day, because some of us who had participated in curling before, had forgotten everything. With the exception of Larry who was ever so graceful on the ice. After a few practice deliveries, we were ready for the main event. It was decided at the time to play International vs Australia.

Pool Night

So 2018 came and went and the Södermalm Blues event planning committee were behind in their events… So our pool night was on January 25, 2019. A cold evening but Nick, a member of the committee, was feeling the heat as it was his first planned event for the club. So he made sure it started off right with a few beers at the local watering hole, The Roo and Elk

A few Little Creatures where drank with maybe the one off of Bundaberg Ginger Beers (it was a cold evening).

So as more and more of the participants came in even more messages came saying that they would be 10 mins late (no finger pointing). Once enough of us had shown up we made or way to the pool hall that Nick had conveniently chose because one it was close to the Roo and two it was even closer to his apartment. [maybe some foreshadowing] But his planning was on point, the rules where outlined in detail. Some of them being new even to myself.

Once we made it to the pool hall in Swedish fashion, booking of tables on a Friday night was a no go. We had to wait for a table to be available and win the lottery to see if we would get another close by, which we did. Nick I think at this point was relieved. He had printed out 4 copies of the tournament brackets because he knew that one or two would be fubar by the end of the night and they were. Thanks, Nick!

So the games were starting up and brackets were getting smaller. As the games were being played people started ordering food and once one person ordered falukorv stroganoff it seemed like everyone ordered it.

So after fueling up on some Swedish delicacies the games continued and the time for playing it safe was over. Trick shots started some more successful than others.

Nearing the end of the tournament there were fewer players and more hecklers. Nerves were high and there was at least one person who sank the eight ball prematurely.

Backstreetboy match – Matt B vs Matt C

Those extra bracket prints came in handy. After all the games where played the final game was about to begin. (Matt B vs Worldwar Tom Z)

And the person who came out on top was Matt B.

After the final game was played shots were had and a mandatory photo was taken.

Chess & Homebrew Championships 2017

Last Friday saw the Södermalm AFC 10th annual chess/home brew gala evening!

It was 3rd club social event for the winter season with a strong turn out of 14 participants keen to try their hand at chess or merely along for the beer tasting.

With 2 groups formed with 7 players each off we went…. Group 1 was the group of death with 3 strong favourites Lars, Johnny (7 time winner) and murf (current champion and wearing the yellow jersey) all tussling for top 2 positions and semi final berth.

Murf toppling Jonny Briscoe was what some called an early upset. However murf simply stated ” that was no upset ! no one beats me anymore, i’m the best player Söder has ever seen”.

Bonecrusher, former club downlow champ who has flown from brisbane for the nights festivities forced a miracle  stalemate with Lars, Lars also had stalemate against murf, forcing a play off match against Johnny for the 2nd place spot in the semi final which Johnny ended up winning. Murf finished top with 5.5 wins

In group 2 it was a straight forward affair with jordo who cruised to victory in all 6 contests finishing top of the group with 6 points. JR, Chris price and Joel burnell were evenly placed for 2nd place prior to the last group match Joel v price!.

In a thrilling match Joel narrowly beat Chris price to snatch the 2nd place and qualify for the semi-final.

Then followed the home brew tasting interval.

There were 7 entries to the home brew competition from 4 brewers. Check our the photos!

With a wide range of styles and colours of beers, every beer received votes. Voting was a 3,2,1 vote by all 14 jurors.

The final results were as followed.

Black stiffy IPA 7.5% was a clear favourite winning with 23 votes

Brew by Jordo and Lars it had smooth characteristics with a taste of chocolate and hints of coffee and hazelnut.

2nd was Doolz “AA” Pale Ale.

3rd was Brissles’ “Flatliner” Raspberry Weissbier.

Back to the chess semi finals.

Johnny beat jordo in a close exciting game. Jordo ran out of time against the 7 time champion with 30 seconds on johhnnys clock. Denying Jordo his first finals berth.

In the other semi final. All the big talk and alcohol caught up with murf. Not realising his own alcohol intake he made several rookie mistake saw him go from winning to losing by giving up his queen and castle mid game allowing  a sober Joel to waltz into his 3rd final.

Then controversy struck. Time had past and we had to vacate the hired hall. The final was to be staged at Lars flat.

The crowd flowed over to Lars’ to watch the final with a few of the kegs on offer from the brewers including the winning brew!…. but in a final that had lost momentum Joel somehow cornered Johnny into a position of submission winning his first final and becoming only the fourth winner in 10 years of the club chess championship!

A great night was had by all who attended.

Also a congratulations to Nick law who beat murf in the pool final on the 7th November.

Next event is the club 10 pin bowling end of January.

A new king in town

Five players turned up to the Södermalm chess and beer championship. A surprisingly low number since the chess title was up for grabs due to Brissles’ late withdrawal. The unluckiest man in Söder missed his second off-season competition due to vinterkräksjukan. In the starting lineup for the chess comp was two time runner up Murf, triple semi-finalist Larry, this winter’s grand slam possibility JR, the dark horse Rappa and the white knight Bobby Love.

Next up is Bromma Vikings on the 21st.

Mighty Mick’s Majestic 2015

Our Club Co-Captain had an extraordinary year to remember and probably never to be repeated by anyone… ever.

Michael Larsson was our club Co-Captain.

He was our Club ‘Non-Australian’ Best and Fairest.

He was also our Club Overall Best and Fairest winning the “Jordo Shield” with a whopping 63 votes (2nd place had 35 votes).

He was our club leading goal-kicker with a club record 42 goals in 2015.

Mick won the Stockholm league (SAFF) Best and Fairest – The coveted Lars Hagberg Medal.

He won the SAFF league leading goal kicker award for 2015.

Mick was Co-Captain of our SAFF Premiership winning team.

Our club Södermalm also played in the inaugural Swedish national league – the Elitserien 2015. We won the Premiership of that league too – Mick was Co-Captain of our Premiership team and played the final game with broken ribs.

Mick was voted the Best and Fairest winner of the inaugural Elitserien league.

Mick also ran our club trainings throughout the season.

Earlier in the year, Mick and brother Max lead the Swedish National team to victory in the Nordic Challenge over Denmark and Norway.

Not a bad year hey? Captain of 2 Premierships, Club Best and Fairest, League Best and Fairest in 2 different leagues, SAFF League leading goal-kicker, Club leading goal-kicker, Club Trainer, Club Leader, represented Sweden and won the Nordic Challenge… and he is an all-round top top bloke.

We all love Mick, and look forward to seeing him leading the Blues to more success in 2016!

Congratulations Mick & Rob, Club Champions 2015

The Club would like to congratulate Michael Larsson and Rob Njoku on winning the Club Best and Fairest Awards for 2015.

Rob won the award for the Best Australian Player, Mick won the Best Non-Australian. The overall winner of the “Jordo Shield” (the player with the most votes) went to Mick Larsson with a mammoth 63 votes.

That makes 2 Club Championship Awards for both of these boys, Mick winning back-to-back and Rob winning his 1st back in 2013. Mick is now only 1 win away from matching big brother Max with a record 3 Club Championship awards.

Directly after the presentation of the awards, Mick was quoted as saying “I can’t wait to get stuck into next season!” and Rob quipped “Next year I’m hoping to play more consistently…”. By the sounds of that, we can expect another successful season in 2016 for Söder!

Gaelan wins Gold with “brew for the people”!

Söder 1st year brewer Gaelan Doolan has won the 2015 Gold Medal at the Södermalm AFC Home-Brew competition in a boil-over result last Friday night 13th November!

Last year’s winner Lars “Heisenberg” Hagberg was raging hot favourite, however his brew didn’t go down as well as anticipated, while Jordo sufferred a blow-out on 2 of his kegs that he had primed for the Söder Brewing Championship. Old Brissles’ brew once again fell flat.

This year it was all about Doolz’s Coopers Pale Ale, which he claimed on the night that he “…brewed for the people” and backed that claim up with the most voted for brew of the night – voted on by all 17 punters in attendance. “It was a Coopers Pale Ale brewed from extract and dry hopped with some Cascade hops – it wasn’t any more complicated than that!” exclaimed Doolan immediately after claiming Gold.  It just goes to show that you don’t need to be a PHD Chemist to win the Söder Home Brew Gold Medal – a result that we hope will bring even more new entrants next season!

Congratulations Gaelan, you have earned the right to label your bottles with “Södermalm AFC Gold Medal Winner 2015”!

Södermalm win the first edition of Elitserien!

Södermalm sent down a squad of 18 players plus coach to Malmö for the last game of the season and the decider of the first edition of Elitserien.

The first half was ruff and physical and the umpires
struggled to control the game. After a couple of send offs the players shaped up and the game continued a hard and well played contest. Poor kicking by Söder put Malmö in front after 3 quarters by 11 points, which was pretty much what they needed to win the competition. But in the final quarter of the season Södermalm showed why they deserve to be called the best team in Sweden. They piled on the whole quarter and won the game by 10.10 (70) to 8.11 (59).

Best on ground was Matt Schulte (6.2)!

“We just wanted to give the guys more game time, we didn’t think we’d go and win the bloody thing” commented President Joel Burnell after playing his only game this season, kicking 2.1.

Everything’s coming up roses for Södermalm, finally.

Söder belt Solna to claim 2015 SAFF Premiership – Match Report

Nothing lasts these days. Jobs, marriages, Prime Ministerships. Big on promises, short on delivery. About the only thing you could count on these days is Södermalm losing the Grand Final. They have lost the last four. Four years running. Four years is a long time in anything. Especially being Prime Minister.

The Blues have won more games than anyone in the last four years but have nothing to show for it. Except pride. Except spirit. Except the monkey on their back! Sometimes truth needs harder evidence. Concrete evidence. Or silver. When the final siren sounded at the JCG this afternoon, and the drop-in scoreboard, screwed precariously to the cyclone fencing showed Söder 152 points up on the Solna Axemen, no discussion was necessary. The evidence was clear. In the shape of a Premiership cup.

This was a belting. But if we only talk about the game, we’d be missing the point. This was not about Jason Neindorf’s 6 goal, Kingsley-Medal winning haul, or Johnny Briscoe’s 5 goal second half impersonation of Ted Hopkins, or Max Larsson’s Jim Stynes, or Johan Dahlberg’s “best game ever” (as Max Larsson just told me ) or Gaelan Doolan’s second-best-on-ground performance (so he tells me). It wasn’t about Marcus ‘Rappa’ Rappocio’s Scott Pendlebury-like gliding gallops from wing to wing and flank to flank, or forward pocket Chris ‘Tanka’ Tancredi’s contribution of a solitary behind – a mercurial snap from the boundary that clipped the post (so he tells me) – in a score of 167, only to be outscored by back-pocket Andrew Rundle. It wasn’t about 100-game legend Lars ‘Larry’ Hagberg’s quiet but relentless pursuit of the ball or Jonas ‘Hulk’ Holm’s bone-crushing tackles that could be heard from the sidelines (against the wind). The game wasn’t about Oscar Löfgren’s 4 kicks and Matthew Barton’s 6 in a desolate back-line, or Rob Njoku’s battered body finally getting through a whole game, or Kaj Karlsson’s bullocking and thumping kicks or Jonas Raninen’s pre-game prediction that they would win by 100 points. It wasn’t about Martin Winberg’s miss from point blank range. It wasn’t about Fergo going through the game unnoticed. And it wasn’t  about the magnificent umpiring (so he tells me) from retired Bromma Viking, Andrew Gillard. And it was definitely not about coach Daniel Jordan’s pre-match address and tactical nous, though he was Barrassi-like (so he tells me).

Söder were brilliant. 25 goals to 2 in a grand final doesn’t need a unit of measurement for greatness. But today was about more than that. A club is more than the sum of its parts.

Not taking the number of Premierships into account, Södermalm is the benchmark of the SAFF. They have more players, more members, more club events than any other. They have a chess club, a fishing club, a homebrewing club, a pool comp and a curling comp. In real terms, they are a social club that happens to play footy.  SAFF is a 9-a-side competition. 19 turned up to play in this year’s grand final. 3 less than last year. They keep turning up. They keep coming back. Today, they broke their grand final hoodoo and set a new record for the winning margin in a grand final. But it wasn’t about that.

Final Scores:

Södermalm 25.17.167 defeated Solna Axemen 2.3.15.

Thanks to Rob “Haiku Bob” Scott for this match report.Picture: Only Jordo, Larry, Brissles, Mick and Johan remain from our last Premiership in 2009.
