Larry takes the lead

After a couple of days of scanning the rivers of Jämtland and learning to think like a Harr it was finally time to enter the fishing competition. Two casts later Larry was standing by the river with a broken fishing rod and a 48 cm/800 g Harr.
That puts him in the lead in the fishing competition and the current number to beat is 80%.

“It takes a champion fisherman to catch a champion fish” he said with a smug look.

Södermalm breaks the ice!

It was sunny and 25 degrees as Södermalm took on Finland Icebreakers at Årsta today. Now, which team would struggle more in the heat, the dehydrated Finns or Södermalm with only 1 interchange? As it turned out the game was a very even with the play flowing back and forth. Both teams got off to a good start and the 1st quarter ended up dead even. In the second quarter the wind picked up a little in Södermalms favor who went into half time break with a 15 point lead. The Finns didn’t manage to utilize the 2 goal breeze in the third quarter and it looked like it would be an easy ride home for Söder. A two goal lead and playing with the wind in the last quarter. But the Finns fought back hard and kicked 3 goals within the first 3 minutes in the last quarter. Suddenly they were in the lead for the first time in the game. Söder came back and got in front by a couple of goals again but only for a short while. During the last 5 minutes it was only a couple of points the difference and both teams fought desperately to score a goal. As the final whistle went it was Söder who stood victorious by 2 points (11.17 – 11.15). Well played by the whole team. Special mention to Ryan, Max and Jeremy from Norrtälje who came down to help out. Also to Tanka who kicked 6 goals, but should have kicked 10… And to Dan Goldberg who kicked 3 goals in his second Södermalm game. Hope to see you back for a whole season.

The fishing season is open

Jordo landed a 60 cm pike up in Smedjebacken on Friday thereby taking the lead in the Söder 2013 Fishing Competition.
“An ice-fishing rod with a worn out glow worm lure from the 80s, that’s the way to go!”

A pale shade of blue

It was coach Jordo who put a riddle to the team after the game against Solna on the JCG – What do you get if you take the team captain, last season’s BnF, winner of the SAFF goal kicking comp, a board member, a stay at home dad, someone at choir practice,  a pair of exchange students and one or two national team players? I’ll tell you, you get a full team not on the field today! Not even Bluey’s here! It’s not good enough!

Söder came to play with 9 players, but it was all uphill from there. Tarzan ripped his hamstring after 3 minutes of play, leaving Söder effectivly one man short for the game. Iron Guts, still in rehab from a knee injury after pre season curling,  pulled on the jersey and settled in the goal square after first quarter. Södermalm largely balanced the game until half time, although failing to convert good play into goals, much thanks to a massive effort by Bull, Oscar and Rob ‘Mr T’ in the ruck.

First double header at The JCG!

Both games this Saturday have been moved to Skarpnäck.
First kick-off at 12.00: Bromma vs. Årsta.
Second game starts at 14.00: Solna vs. Södermalm.

In addition, there’s been a great deal of interest  in how great “the J“can actually be. We know it’s the best oval in the Stockholm region, and we are confident the best footy in Sweden is played here. But hey, don’t trust us, come see for yourself this Saturday.

As a teaser, here is how Södermalm set up the goal posts last summer

Södermalm win again

Sunday arvo footy saw Söder take on a depleted Årsta at the J. It also saw the return of last years league Swedish b&f Mick, the new and improved medium Dave and first gamer Martin.Martin kept tradition alive by kicking a goal in his first game and ended it with 4 as did medium Dave who looked unstoppable, nearly taking a mark from his own kick. Miguel got thrown into the forward line to snag a couple as well.

Special mention to the guys who helped out Årsta and gave us a good game, O train dominated as usual and Rob, Carson and Bull had plenty of it as did the one quarter specialist Murf.

Final Result: Södermalm 14.10 94  vs. Årsta 6.4 40

2013 season start best in club history after another big win

On a twelve a side ground with only nine players a side there were a lot of open space this Saturday at the JCG when Söder took on Norrtälje.

The mighty blues pushed ahead already in the first quarter and never let the control of the game slip out of its hands. With much open space Söder demonstrated great ball possession with lots of hand-passing, working the ball down field, into scoring position and most often – finishing with a goal.

Final score

Goals Behinds Total
Södermalm 25 12 162
Norrtälje 3 0 18

Mentions

  • Martin kicked a goal with his first ever kick in his first ever game — following the great debut practice that Carson started last week.
  • Bull and the O-train returned, Bull kicking one goal and Oscar four.

Söder celebrate Ivan’s 50th with a win! (by Chris Tancredi)

It was the 2012 Grand Final rematch between Södermalm and Bromma, approximately 7 months earlier it was Bromma who were successful, this time Söder. It was a team that comprised of a Spaniard, a Finn, an American, a few Aussies, a few Swedes, and a Murph (sounds like the start of a joke).

Söder entered the match with several new faces who were keen to stamp their authority and they didn’t disappoint.

Remembrance ceremony. Kudos to Martin Schulte-Hötte for the pic!

Söder players on tour

Already before the start of the season Södermalm’s two national team players show good form.
Martin represented SAFF in the regional game in Malmö last weekend. Although Skåne got up by 7 goals Martin had a solid performance. Allegedly the regional coach was asking after the game “Why aren’t there MORE Söder players in the Dynamite squad?”
On the 10th of April Natis went down to Copenhagen to play the in the 2nd leg of the “Kennelly – O’Loughlin Showcase” The best players in Europe mixed with the Australian U18’s team for a friendly game. The game was played in front of AFL legends Dipper, Tadhg Kennelly and Michael O’Loughlin. Coach Dan McClaer was asking after the game “Why AREN’T there more Söder players in the National team?”
