Södermalm hit the ground runnning (by Kaj)

The first match of the season 2014 was an anticipated one! Södermalm faced the 2012 premiers Bromma Vikings on a cloudy and cold Saturday. After a long pre-season the Söder boys were fired up and ready to go at first bounce.

The game started off with both midfields fighting hard to get the upper hand. Söder was kicking with the wind in the first quarter and soon put some pressure on the Bromma defense. The nerve settler for Söder came about 5 minutes into the game when Kaj dribbled in the first goal of the match. The strongish wind on the JCG helped Söder to an easy 5 goals to 0 lead by quarter time. Continue reading

Season kick off!

The SAFF Premiership 2014 starts with a triple header at the JCG (Skarpnäck) this Saturday. First up are Söder and Bromma at 11.30. This game is followed by the Anzac Day commemorations and then Årsta and Norrtälje go head to head. The day finishes with a friendly game between Solna and the new team from Uppsala; The Hammers. Get down to the J and support the boys in Blue!

Jordo and Ben on the SAFF board

Due to the fact that a few SAFF board members are stepping down prematurely a SAFF special general meeting was held. Two Söder members were voted in: Jordo as Manager of Footy Operations (re-elected) and Ben Condon as Vice President. Ryan Kingsley (Norrtälje) was elected as President.  In addition it was decided that SAFF will take over the social events, formerly organized by the clubs, and that they will appoint a social events manager to do this with the help of the clubs.

SAFF Awards night

Over the years we’ve gotten accustomed to Söder players receiving medals at the SAFF Awards and we didn’t get disappointed this year either. Oscar ‘the O-train’ Löfgren got the medal for best non-Aussie! He was second on the overall ladder only 1 point after the best Aussie Adrian Knee.

All in all an enjoyable night with speeches, good food and jovial company. The SAFF president Ben Kirk was awarded a Södermalm tie in appreciation of his efforts over the years.

Oscar – best non-aussie 2013!

Söder bites the dust, again

Despite the fact that it was Tanka’s 50th game Söder fell short in the Grand Final for the third year in a row. Again we ended up minor premiers but couldn’t go all the way and win the Grand Final. It was a tight and physical game against Solna and although Söder were winning on the field it didn’t show on the score board. With 28 to 20 scoring shots in Söder’s favour, it was Solna’s accurate kicking that earned them the title. Despite a great performance by the team this season we have to wait until next year for another premiership. Bring on 2014!
Let’s kick off the social season!

Final score:
Södermalm 7.21  63
Solna        15.5  95

Söder to play Solna in the Grand Final

It was a perfect day for football when Solna and Bromma clashed in the semi final. A very tight affair with never more than a 2 goal lead for the first 3 quarters. In the last quarter Solna with a bigger bench managed to extend the lead. Bromma fought back at the very end and the game ended with Solna 3 goals up.

The Grand Final between Söder and Solna will be played at 15.00 on Saturday the 21st at the JCG.

Blues beat Vikings by a goal!

For their Viking AusKick day Bromma had kindly invited the Söder juniors to take part. Hugo, Leon and Alex turned up and had a great session together with the Bromma juniors. Gills, Pat and Rappa guided the young football players practicing handballing, kicking, picking the ball off the ground and all the other drills the big boys do. They finished off with a scratch match before enjoying the post game BBQ. The kids had a great time thanks to a great effort by all involved. The future’s looking bright for footy in Stockholm.

Next up was the last home and away game for Bromma and Söder. The sun was beating down as the two teams stepped onto the field Continue reading

Söder hold on to beat Solna (by The O-Train)

In the first match at Friday’s double header at the JCG Söder got back at Solna for the loss before summer. With both teams missing players at the European championship in Dublin the game turned out to be a close battle all the way through.

Söder opened the scoring but Solna fought back in the latter part of the first quarter and were ahead at the first break.

The second quarter opened as badly as the first ended for the Blues but the tide again changed and Söder got back in to the game after being able to keep the pressure in the midfield and scoring a couple. Continue reading

Söder prevailed over Solna

It went all the way down to the wire in this hard fought clash between the two top teams, but when the siren went Södermalm stood victorious over Solna by just 3 points. Stay tuned for the match report.

Bromma comfortably beat Årsta by 92-16.

2013 season start best in club history after another big win

On a twelve a side ground with only nine players a side there were a lot of open space this Saturday at the JCG when Söder took on Norrtälje.

The mighty blues pushed ahead already in the first quarter and never let the control of the game slip out of its hands. With much open space Söder demonstrated great ball possession with lots of hand-passing, working the ball down field, into scoring position and most often – finishing with a goal.

Final score

Goals Behinds Total
Södermalm 25 12 162
Norrtälje 3 0 18

Söder players on tour

Already before the start of the season Södermalm’s two national team players show good form.
Martin represented SAFF in the regional game in Malmö last weekend. Although Skåne got up by 7 goals Martin had a solid performance. Allegedly the regional coach was asking after the game “Why aren’t there MORE Söder players in the Dynamite squad?”
On the 10th of April Natis went down to Copenhagen to play the in the 2nd leg of the “Kennelly – O’Loughlin Showcase” The best players in Europe mixed with the Australian U18’s team for a friendly game. The game was played in front of AFL legends Dipper, Tadhg Kennelly and Michael O’Loughlin. Coach Dan McClaer was asking after the game “Why AREN’T there more Söder players in the National team?”
