The field was moist like a maiden’s freshly washed hair and the air was crisp like starched linen. High dry Low wet conditions like these promised both fast and skilful play. Although both teams were already through to the finals no one was expecting an easy game. Årsta was out for their first win against Söder who in turn wanted to show that the 2 mishaps against Bromma and Solna earlier were just that. Södermalm got off to a bad start with returning big man Chris Koelmeyer injuring himself in the very first ruck contest. A busted ankle meant that he was out for the rest of the game. We keep our fingers crossed that he will be back for the grand final.
The Blues were kicking accurately but insufficiently during the first quarter and went to break 2 points behind. In the second quarter Årsta increased the lead as Södermalm only managed to score a few points. The third quarter saw some of the best play ever performed by Södermalm. The ball went swiftly and accurately from backs to forwards, who made no mistakes and put it through the big sticks. A single tear found its way down Coach Jordan’s left cheek as Iron Guts and Johan executed some text book hand balling in the center. Five straight goals put Söder in front and it looked like it was going to be an easy ride home for the boys in blue. But Årsta had not given up and came out steaming in the fourth quarter. Hard work by Boots and Thor soon brought Årsta within a sniff of victory. During the last few minutes Söder was clinging on to a 4 point lead when Ivan ‘Tarzan’ Rexed kicked a spinner that sealed the win. In the end Södermalm brought home the bacon due to more accurate kicking.
“You kick one half spastic kick that manages to sneak in between the posts and suddenly you’re the hero of the day. You work your heart out in the back line all day and no one even remembers your name.” commented a tired but happy Ivan.
“Right, I’m off to play a game of soccer” said Iron Guts and off he went.
Final score: Södermalm 9.8.62 def. Årsta 7.10.52
