The first match of the season 2014 was an anticipated one! Södermalm faced the 2012 premiers Bromma Vikings on a cloudy and cold Saturday. After a long pre-season the Söder boys were fired up and ready to go at first bounce.
The game started off with both midfields fighting hard to get the upper hand. Söder was kicking with the wind in the first quarter and soon put some pressure on the Bromma defense. The nerve settler for Söder came about 5 minutes into the game when Kaj dribbled in the first goal of the match. The strongish wind on the JCG helped Söder to an easy 5 goals to 0 lead by quarter time.
In the second quarter Bromma had the wind in their backs and it showed. Playing some great footy at times Bromma, even with a man short, they gave Södermalm a taste of their own medicine. Bromma got three goals back in the second quarter but were in the end run over by the strong Södermalm midfielders lead by Dylan and the new recruit Nick.
Third quarter saw the return of Södermalm’s own Jonathon Briscoe to the forward line. Johnny quickly kicked a bag of 5 in his strong return to footy as Södermalm sped away from Bromma kicking a total of 10 goals in the third quarter.
The last quarter started off with Bromma kicking a goal when most of the Söder defenders had pushed forward in hopes of getting their name amongst the goal kickers. A quick spray from Coach Bull did the trick and the defenders stepped up their game to make sure no more accidents would happen. Half way in to the fourth quarter Södermalm legend and Swedish footy icon Lars Hagberg finally found the big sticks kicking a goal in his 100th SAFF game.
When the final siren sounded Södermalm had kicked an impressive 25.16.166 to Bromma’s 4.4.28.
