The Son Of Söder!

‘TOP SPOT ALMOST SECURED!’ by Tanka

It was a rematch of the 2010 and 2011 preliminary finals, the 2009 grand final, it was 2 old foes locking horns yet again, yep it was Söder versus Bromma. In the absence of Captain Max Larsson, Petter Eek took on the role as captain in his 50th game.

The game commenced as expected, it was hard, tough, and of course sloppy in the drenched fields of Årstafältet. A low scoring first quarter saw Bromma go in with a 2 point lead, both sides only managing 2 goals each. Continue reading

The King Fisher!

Finally someone broke the 50 cm barrier in the fishing competition. Just off ‘Pike point’ in the mighty Nissan River, Sean pulled up a 69 cm pike at 13.00 today. Around 3 kilos he says and the lure was of course the yellow and orange ‘Pike buster’. We got a quick word with the aquatic avenger: “Well, it wasn’t a Mexican Marlin but whatever puts me in front in the comp will have to do. And I’ll tell you what, I’m sure this is the one I saw bumping ugly in the reeds earlier this year”. We only have two questions; can someone break the 70 cm barrier? And what’s up with the yellow nail polish Kungen?

Enjoy your vacation…

…cause next week we kick off with the second half of the SAFF 2012 Premiership.

Södermalm training will start again on Tuesday the 24th of July at Årsta, 18.30 as usual.
The first game after the summer break is against Solna on Saturday the 28th of July. The venue is Årsta and the game starts at 11.00.

The JCG is up!

The 4th of July is a historic date for footy in Stockholm. This is the birthday of Stockholm’s first footy oval and Söder’s new home ground, The JCG! The field measures 135m by 100m and has permanent goal posts. Visible in the background is Söder’s new club house, fully equipped with BBQ, showers and storage facility.

Södermalm scores in Finland

Södermalm set out from Stockholm on Friday night to go to Salo to play a combined Finnish side. The seas were ruff that night and upon arrival in Turku the team was down to 12 players, not a good sign for a 14 a-side game. However, when the team finally got to Salo it was up to full strength again. The Finns showed straight away what type of game this was going to be; hard running and hard tackling.

Söder on top before the summer break

The last SAFF round before summer break was a double header in Norrtälje. Both games were played in what must now be known as typical Norrtälje weather; rain. Solna took on Norrtälje in the first game and the Axemen who came up with a strong squad managed to beat the Dockers comfortably. Söder went up against a diminished but not demoralized Årsta. Söder beat Solna and Johan turned 50

In perfect football conditions Södermalm took on the reigning champions Solna. Some say this game was the true Grand Final of Sweden Cup. After an even 1st quarter, Söder did everything possible to keep Dave, who was manning the score board, very busy. The was an historic day as it was Berger’s 1st game for Södermalm, and The Johan’s 50th! Both players celebrated by kicking goals. Final score: Söder 20.16.136 vs. Solna 7.9.51.
Next item on the agenda is the double header up in Norrtälje this Saturday. At 12.00 it’s Norrtälje vs. Solna and at 14.00 Söder against Årsta.

‘What actually happened’ by J. Murphy

Saturday the 12th of may,
The Blues travelled to Norrtälje for the new franchise club’s debut in the SAFF.
After a strong win in the opening game against Årsta the confidence in the squad
was high, although, there was an air of trepidation on the one hour bus trip north
as the blues were still missing some big name players and they were up against
the unknown quantity of Norrtälje.

Welcome Dockers

Lethal takes the lead in the Söder fishing comp.

After several days of fishing during Valborg, Kungen and Lars avoided the bad name by a couple of last minute catches. With the use of a yellow wobbler Lethal managed to hook a 55 cm/1 kg pike. Or as the French say, Le pike.  As the fish was reeled in Captain Hargreaves muttered “I’m gonna appeal to the SAFF for a territorial expansion in the Söder fishing comp…”

Söder shows good form in pre-season hit out.

In windy conditions at the Årsta back field Söder took on first the Karlstad Eagles and then the Norrtälje Dockers in the first footy show down of the year in Stockholm.

Coach Paul took the pre-season games as an opportunity to assess the new line up and improve on the game that has been so effective for Södermalm; keep possession of the ball by running and handballing. Continue reading

AFL live on Eurosport

Footy in Sweden has a golden opportunity this Saturday; Eurosport International is broadcasting the first game of the 2012 AFL season between newcomers GWS and Sydney, at 9.15 am. Please note that this is the main channel, not Eurosport 2, which means a lot more viewers than ordinarily since more people have access to it. Tune in and listen to your favourite Södermalm commentator Jonathon ‘Brissles’ Briscoe! He will more than happily answer any questions or comments you submit by sms.
