A pale shade of blue

It was coach Jordo who put a riddle to the team after the game against Solna on the JCG – What do you get if you take the team captain, last season’s BnF, winner of the SAFF goal kicking comp, a board member, a stay at home dad, someone at choir practice,  a pair of exchange students and one or two national team players? I’ll tell you, you get a full team not on the field today! Not even Bluey’s here! It’s not good enough!

Söder came to play with 9 players, but it was all uphill from there. Tarzan ripped his hamstring after 3 minutes of play, leaving Söder effectivly one man short for the game. Iron Guts, still in rehab from a knee injury after pre season curling,  pulled on the jersey and settled in the goal square after first quarter. Södermalm largely balanced the game until half time, although failing to convert good play into goals, much thanks to a massive effort by Bull, Oscar and Rob ‘Mr T’ in the ruck.

Södermalm win again

Sunday arvo footy saw Söder take on a depleted Årsta at the J. It also saw the return of last years league Swedish b&f Mick, the new and improved medium Dave and first gamer Martin.Martin kept tradition alive by kicking a goal in his first game and ended it with 4 as did medium Dave who looked unstoppable, nearly taking a mark from his own kick. Miguel got thrown into the forward line to snag a couple as well.

Special mention to the guys who helped out Årsta and gave us a good game, O train dominated as usual and Rob, Carson and Bull had plenty of it as did the one quarter specialist Murf.

Final Result: Södermalm 14.10 94  vs. Årsta 6.4 40

Natis can’t stop, won’t stop

Just when you thought you heard enough of this guy Natis for one season, he comes back like a boomerang. Now he’s topping off the  Euro Cup success with being selected for the JLT Group All-Stars to play the  curtain raiser to the AFL European Challenge Cup to play in London the 3rd of November, together with Helsingborg’s Johan Lantz and The Elks own Coach McClear as manager. Clearly the brightest shining star in SAFF at the moment, Natis commented simply – “too bad none of the other Söder boys came to play the Euro Cup, then I’d have some company for the trip” Don’t know about that, but we’re all exited for Natis’ sake and are sure he will make his mark on the game.

Wrap up of the SAFF league

When the whistle blew to mark the end of Solna Axemen vs. Bromma Vikings it was also time to recap the SAFF league 2012 and look forward to the play-off. And what a season! Norrtälje, newcomers in the league, finished off with a bang by claiming their first win against the Årsta Swans in the last round. Södermalm thought to go undefeated through the series but fell on the last hurdle against a pumped-up Bromma. Continue reading

Söder don’t slip on the path to minor premiership

Still undefeated with only two more games before the Grand Final, Söder faced Bromma for the first time this year. Heavy raining before the game transformed Årstafältet into something in between a footy field and a swimming pool. Söder remembered the golden rule of wet footy, man up behind your opponent, and pick up the ball! The final score was 96-47. A special thanks to Kungen on the BBQ!

Söder build for future victories at JCG

So it was said, so it shall be cemented into the ground!  With those epic words club life honorary member Danne Jordansson, project manager, kicked off the working bee session to lay the foundation for the new footy field in Stockholm. The Södermalm working company consisting of  diggers “Nate dog” Natis,  Berger and Tarzan, completed by turbo mixers “Big boi” Brad and “the O-train” Oscar, all supervised by quality assurance officer Larry Lethal, took the opportunity of a short break in the seasonal monsoon to dig holes and filling them with the 2 tonnes of concrete needed for 8 goal posts.

When the flag poles – sorry – goal posts are up, we will be able to say that we have the best oval in the SAFF leauge. Stay tuned to come and see your favourite team at the JCG!

Söder book trip to… Finland

Södermalm is happy to present the itinerary for the mid season footy tour! The goal is Salo in Finland, the home ground of Söder gun recruit Kaj “the Cannon” Karlsson. Bring on that famous Sisu! We will be leaving late the 30th of June and return with an over night cruise the following day. Already there are 17 confirmed travelers, a massive turnout. The club will book 20 beds and the prize is 600kr inkluding the best all you can eat and drink buffet on the baltic sea, special prize for Söder players and social members. A great trip and frequent interchanges during the game is promised. Make sure to contact the club if interested in any of the last few seats.

Also, don’t miss out the rematch of last year’s final. Södermalm Blues vs Solna Axemen this Friday at Årsta, and the traditional BBQ.

Söder bring back the Cup

This weekend saw a revived Sweden Cup take place at the excellent grounds at Norrtälje Sportcenter. The Dockers sure set the bar high for next year’s organizer, and short of the wheather, nothing was left to chance. Unfortunately, this was the factor which would come to put it’s mark on the tournament.
Södermalm had convincingly defeated the Bromma Vikings, the far-traveling Crows from Oslo, and Kårsta Sweagles (the joint Årsta-Karlstad team). While having the home ground advantage, the Dockers struggled to keep up, and the only clear competitor was Solna Axemen. Every result was pointing towards a de facto final between The Blues and The Axemen, when the the wind, rain, and temperature got to be too much, competition was aborted half way through, due to risk of injury and hypothermia, leaving Södermalm on top of the ladder with the highest percentage. The post game sauna was much apreciated.

In combination with the prize ceremony and social the Elks squad for Euro Cup 2012 in Edinburgh this September was presented, and Södermalm can happily inform that club young gun Natis Johansson was once again selected for the national team.
