A disappointing finish to the seniors season…

Södermalm winning the SAFF Grand final seem to be as hard as trying to invade Russia in the winter..

The fourth straight GF loss for Södermalm (second in a row to Solna Axemen) came after hard fought, but sloppy, effort. Even though never trailing by much more than to goals and even leading at halftime the Södermalm mistakes were too costly in the end.

Focusing on the positive side of things it was great to see a Södermalm squad of 21 players (we started the season with 17 registered players) how all gave it their best and played both hard and disciplined.

Even though we come up short when it really counts, we have shown that we are the best TEAM in Stockholm over the last four years. Now lets make every year the year of the Blues!

Final Scores: Solna Axemen 69 (10.9) – Södermalm Blues 55 (8.7)

…and full focus on the social season (where no one will ever beat us)!

Club legend breaks 100 games limit in season premiere

The club hereby recognize the acheivements by Lars ‘Lethal’ Hagberg, who was honored with a medal by the SAFF board after celebrating his 100 game for the blues. The seasoned veteran defender did so by kicking a rarely seen goal in the convincing victory against the Bromma Vikings.

Presented with the 100 games medal, Lethal was met with silent awe from players in rookie-dense Norrtälje and Årsta, almost refusing to believe what they just heared, while the players of Bromma and Solna, being considerably more experienced, still spoke of his consistency over the years with the outmost respect.

For players of Södermalm, and for the club as a whole, Lars is indeed appreciated as a person, a reliable team mate, a source of inspiration, and most valued for his contribution to the club on and off the field. Here’s to another 100 games Larry!

Södermalm looks for greener grass

Last weekend in April was also, in a deeper psychological sense, the first weekend of early summer for the blues. Invited by the Dockers together with the Årsta Swans to Norrtälje, the three teams concluded the pre-season with a mixed-team friendly. The Dockers impressed, as always, with exellent grounds and facilities, but more importantly, the conditions were perfect for a light game of footy. Given the season premiere is already next weekend, it came as no surprise that the three teams were holding back, avoiding injuries and not revealing their true colors unnecessarily. Dockers coach Ryan Tucker, however, declared that he was optimistic about playing already after the summer break, despite still jumping on crouches after breaking his ankle while skiing during winter. Only Söder’s president cannon- ball-Kaj, who allegedly rejected taking a ride out to Norrtälje and instead took the 100km to the coast-near city as a triathlon practice run,  went full on out on the pitch, resulting in a single-accident smashed nose.

Next week is the season premiere for the SAFF league. Stay tuned for updates!

Trainings (again…)

Please note the following information from Coach Angus regarding training in the coming weeks (we’ll try to keep the homepage updated but until we get our regular training running in Skarpnäck times, dates and venues may change).

Gents,

As discussed on Sunday, and for those that could not make it down. We will run an outdoor training session on Årsta backfield on Wednesday 16th April @ 18:00. (Wednesday was selected down to a majority vote…it is for this training session only)

Bring your footy boots, a water bottle or 2 & for those that have not trained here, there are no showers!

By public transport, you can take the Tvärbanan & get off @ Valla torg…then walk on over (click on the link below).

Aim to get there 5-10mins before hand so we can get started @ 18:00 sharp.

Looking forward:

  • There will be no training on Sunday 20th April due to Easter/Påsk vacation
  • We will resume again on Tuesday 22nd April @ Årsta backfield @ 18:00.

Please let me or Kaj know if you can not make it or if you need directions to Årsta.

Thanks
Bull

Trainings

Pre-season trainings are held at Globala gymnasiet/Zinkensdamm (Södermalm) on Sundays 16.45-19 until the end of April.

We meet up at the gym at Globala gymnasiet (https://www.google.se/maps/@59.3166049,18.046786,17z, closest Tube stop is Zinkensdamm) at 16.45 and head down to Zinkensdamm IP around 17. If the weather’s bad we hold the training session indoors at Globala gymnasiet, so bring both indoor and outdoor gear!

New players are most welcome.  Or maybe if you just wanna  give aussie rules a try and meet some friendly faces…

Regular season training at the JCG (Skarpnäcks IP) will be held on Tuesdays 18.30-20.00 staring the 6th of May.

See ya!

Chess, mates!

BY TANKA -Brissles makes it 5 in a row!!! It was a cold Winters night in Stockholm, typical for this time of the year, the snow was falling and there was definitely a buzz in the air. Anticipation was high as 10 of Söders finest jumped off the tunnelbana and headed towards Brissles lokal in the heart of Liljeholmen. The only thing missing was Murph’s championship chess board. Rumour has it that it is currently somewhere in NSW’s Blue Mountains.

Brissles was the short priced favourite to take out his 5th chess tournament and do a hat trick on the Söder social calendar. He already had the footy tipping and pool comp under his belt and was licking his lips at the scene.

Dockers host Round 6 double header

What a day for footy! A blue sky, 28 degrees, green grass and a cooling sea breaze sure showed off the best side of Norrtälje for SAFF R6, featuring The Swans vs. Blues and home team Dockers vs. the Axemen. In the first game, the Årsta Swans gave a statement that they will keep their heads high, despite suffering one hardship after the other during this season, and gave a good fight. In the Södermalm Camp, Brissles acted coach of the day, and promoted himself to playing coach in the third quarter after finding his badge on the tactics board. By then the game was all but over with 5 goals from O-train Oscar and 4 by Dylan, and 10 or so behinds from Tanka.  Södermalm was dominating the game from first ball up, and winning comfortably with 124 (18.16) against Årsta 32 (4.8).
Joel “Iron Guts” Burnell played his 50th game for Södermalm, making him the first Australian to achieve that!

Update EC 2013

The Elks fell short by just 6 points against the reigning European and International Cup champions Ireland. A few more straight kicks and they would have won according to Kaj. Natis and Kaj got a lot of game time and in the words of the modest Finn they “spelade ganska så bra”. This of course means they both had a cracker of a game.

Watch the Ireland – Sweden game on youtube, uploaded by AFL Europe (1st half and 2nd half):

15 minutes into the game Natis kicks a goal soccer style!
And Kaj kicking the 2nd goal after the siren!

Next game is against Croatia on Tuesday at 3 pm.
