Södermalm down under

During the International Cup this year it was fun to see all the support the Swedish national team received in Australia. Even more amazing was it to see how the Södermalm spirit is spreading outside Sweden. Seemed like everywhere we went you could see people walking around in Söder jumpers. They all want to get on the Södermalm train, and who can blame them. Our biggest fan outside Sweden, Lyle, rocked up to see the Elks play Ireland in Sydney; “I was on my way from Brisbane to Perth and decided to stop over to watch the game” What dedication!

Söder off-season kick off

Södermalm chess club

Södermalm club awards night is only a few days away, Fri 28th of Oct, 19.00 at our sponsor pub O’Learys Liljehomen, but we are already looking ahead towards the end of next month, when the prestigeous Chess night is being held. Reigning Södermalm chess champion Brissles, with two consecutive wins, is organizing this years event in his föreningslokal the 25th of Nov, in combination with a beer tasting. The selestion is a well kept secret, but it has been made clear that Harboe pils, by some referred to as Harboe p**s, will not be the drink of choice again.

Beforehand roumors talk about a repeat of the classic 2009 Max vs. Ryan game, with Ryan looking for revenge for his abrupt 3-move loss.

SAFF Awards night at the Oxen bar

SAFF proudly presents the winners of the Lars Hagberg medal

According to tradition, SAFF invited all clubs for a grand evening at the Oxen bar in Stockholm last Sat. The presentation of the Lars Hagberg medal for SAFF best and fairest and a SAFF all-star team, new for this year, was in the hands of MC Ryan Kingsley.

The odds on the combination of  winners, well-earned Årsta’s Robert Young and Falun’s Henrik Andersson was being played at 7.5 times the money in the back room earlier under the day, but as the odds dropped shortly before the presentation to little more than the money back, in combination with MC Kingsley winning the tipping comp earlier, a sucpicion arose that there is a leakage from the SAFF headquarters. A disgruntled Joel Burnell was overheard mumbling “this would have paid our ticket for the honey moon trip, and now I have nothing, NOTHING!

A big thanks to relentless Dave Carde, for arranging the evening, and for making the chocolate cakes for dessert(!!!), and a huge congratulations to Rob and to Henrik – playing his first season aussie rules ever, good job!!!
