Good Old Södermalm opened their account in 2010 with a hard fought 15pt win over Bromma at Bromma on Saturday. In windy conditions, Söder outscored Bromma against the wind in the final quarter to win 67 – 52.
Both sides fielded depleted line-ups which resulted in limited subs for both teams, but it was Söder who came out on top of the close but scrappy game. In this first Grand Final replay of 2010, the two sides showed a high level of respect for each other.
Söder played the 1st quarter with the wind and got off to a good start with Murph and Iron Guts winning the ball in the centre. Söder put the pressure on but due to poor kicking they were only 2 goals in front at the first break.
In the 2nd quarter the roles were changed. Over and over again Bromma lobbed the ball towards their forward line but Söder full back Tarzan outmarked their forwards and kept the goals to a minimum. Söder fought back persistently and in the end Petter managed to sneak in a goal for Söder on a tight angle.
At half time Söder was down by 3 points but with the arrival of Cody and Dan directly from Arlanda the future looked brighter. Going in to the 3rd quarter Coach Jordan emphasized the need for utilizing the wind. Well, Tanka wanted to show that he had paid attention. He grabbed the ball off the first ruck and after a solo rush got within 40m and put it through for a goal. An inspirational start was just what the doctored had ordered. Big Blue and the Wolfman dominated the ruck competition but again the Blues failed to make use of the breeze and seal the deal. Things were looking tuff as the wind was picking up.
Bromma came back in the 4th quarter and got within a few points. In desperate need of a goal Söder worked hard at moving the ball up the field against the wind but all efforts resulted in behinds. The pressure was on, the game was riding on this, but the Wolfman didn’t tremble and kicked truly. “Good to see the goal kicking practice has paid off” commented Coach Jordan. In the end Söder stood up strong against the wind and won the game with 67-52. Seabass walked off the field with a smile on his face because he couldn’t remember the last time he had won a game.
Coach Jordo was very pleased with his men and the fact they took home the four points. “To come out here to Bromma and continue our winning streak here was a fantastic effort from the boys. Also I think this was a learning experience for Bromma, after today they should be able to throw the ball in properly”
Söder Players’ Player for Round 2 was Joel “Iron Guts” Burnell.
