The inaugural Södermalm Curling Championship was held last Thursday at Sundbyberg Curlinghall. The teams that made the final were Yellow (Michael Bourke, Mark McManus, Brissles, Joel Burnell) and Blue (Jordo, Ivan, Lars).
The Yellows had the hight advantage with ruck man Bourkie, a definite superiority in birds eye perspective on the nest. On the other hand Ivan caused early confusion for the Yellow team by playing from the right hack.
The Blues got off to a perfect start by taking 3 and 2 points in the first two rounds with some text book tactics. The Yellows decided that enough was enough and struck back by winning the 3rd round. In the 4th round Jordo was skipper for the Blues and set up the team for a comfortable 3 point win. However, Bourkie was of a different opinion. He lubed up his last stone so it could squeeze passed the Blue guards and after an enormous sweeping effort by the Yellow team they managed to steal the 3 pointer for a 1 point win.
After two weak rounds and a couple of stones going mysteriously off target you could see the Blues were getting nervous. With a mere 5-2 lead the game was suddenly up for grabs.
The 5th and Championship round saw some fierce stand off tactics. With only 1 stone left for each team there were no scoring stones and 10 plus stones blocking the nest. At this stage Ivan decided to put the the curl back into curling. With a millimetre margin he managed to pull off the old “knock-in” of a blue guard thereby winning the round for the Blues with 1 point.
The final round was a cake walk for the Blues, a 3 point win with the very last stone of the game a sniff off tee (bullseye).
Final score: 9-2 In favour of the Blue team. Check out the gallery.
